It is an Elephant Reserve and a Project Tiger Reserve. It is a Biosphere Reserve and has also been considered to be a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The park is home to some incredible rare species. You will find the Assam Roofed Turtle moving steadily while the Hispid Hare hops about. The Golden Langur cries from the trees while the Pygmy Hog moves slowly. These animals cannot be found elsewhere in the entire world! Here the Wild Water Buffalo can also be found grazing about along with gaurs and barasingha.55 mammalian species have been recorded as living her along with 50 species of reptiles. The cat family and the langur family are well established here. Leopards, Indian tigers, Asian golden cats, black panthers and clouded leopards represent the cat family. Langurs are represented by the Golden Langur and the Capped Langur.
