Kumariamman Temple
According to the legends, the virgin goddess Kumari managed to defeat demons singlehandedly and freed the world from their grasp. The virgin, known as kanya in the local tongue, goddess is considered to be an avatar of the great mother goddess Devi. At this magnificent temple, the goddess is worshipped. The temple is small but decorated beautifully. You can even hear the waves crashing on to the shore from the three seas while you feel humbled under the gaze of the idol warmly lit by oil fires. You can enjoy a spectacular sunset from the temple.
Vivekananda Memorial
The legendary Swami Vivekananda is immortalized in the memorial which lies on a rocky outgrowing. Waters from the two seas and one ocean crash all around it as the memorial stands proudly, reminding everyone of the message spread by the great Swami. In December, 1892, the Swami mediated here for 2 days before leaving for foreign shores to spread his message. Built in 1970, the fascinating memorial reflects the architectural styles sourced from all over India. You will be surrounded by the glorious waters of the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
The Thiruvalluvar Statue
The Thiruvalluvar Statue stands like a majestic Indian version of the Colossus of Rhodes. Located on a smaller rock near the Vivekananda Memorial, the statue is dedicated to a legendary poet of Tamil literature, Thiruvalluvar. He was also considered to be a saint. The incredible statue was the result of hard work by over 5000 sculptors.
Gandhi Memorial
The magnificent Gandhi Memorial, located at the end of India, is a fitting tribute to the great man who helped free the country. In fact, the entire structure was built just the way Mahatma Gandhi would have like it. The structure was inspired by the temples in Odisha. However, it was built by architects of the Hindu, Muslim and Christian religions. The central plinth in the memorial contains some of the ashes of the legendary man. It is fascainting because the rays of the sun fall directly on the plinth on 2nd October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. You can enjoy some beautiful sunsets from the tower in the memorial.
Kamaraj Memorial
The beautiful Kamaraj Memorial was built to commemorate the life of K. Kamaraj. This great man was nicknamed the Gandhi of the South due to his charismatic leadership in the post-independence era of the nation. He was a highly respected and powerful politician who was the chief minister of the Madras State and Tamil Nadu, its successor. The gallery inside the memorial showcases the life of the great man.
