The union territory of Daman and Diu is a fascinating place. Wilderness defines the majority of the region. Here nature is untamed but beautiful. The region has become irrevocably affected by the long Portuguese rule. The enclave of Daman is a specter of wilderness with a dash of Portuguese influences thrown into the mix. The old charm of Portugal seeps through the myriad collection of exquisite forts and churches. The beaches here are unfettered in their natural beauty. The palm trees sway against the breeze creating a contrast of green against the grey seas. Diu, on the other hand, is different from its cousin. It too has been affected by the Portuguese occupation which is brought to the fore by three spectacular churches. The seas are more restrained here. However, the best thing to do on these beaches is to ride a scooter. Riding a scooter with the cool winds rushing through your hair is an amazing experience.
How to Get There
By Air :
Vapi railway station is the nearest located railway station to Daman is only 12 Kms away while the Delwada railway station is closely located to Diu. Ahmedabad and Mumbai are the two railway station of the western railways which are placed very close to Daman.
By Rail :
Daman and Diu are also well connected to the other parts of India by an excellent road network. The National Highway number 8 is used to connect Daman by the motorable road with Ahmedabad , Vadodara and Mumbai etc.
Devka Beach
The untouched beauty of nature in the Devka Beach makes it the best place for a relaxing sojourn. You can enjoy some excellent and picturesque views here. The sunrise and the sunset are the best times to revel in the glory of wild nature. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore is a piece of music that you will never get tired listening to.
Moti Daman Fort
The colossal structure of the Moti Daman Fort stands proudly against the wild landscape in Daman. Built in the year 1559, the fort is an epic structure replete with 10 citadels. Just like ancient forts, this one too has a moat surrounding it. The moat connects the river to the sea. Inside lies a massive barracks where once soldiers used to toil and rest. The massive fort gives you an opportunity for exercising your desire for exploration. Each gateway of the fort contains a striking collection of inscriptions.
Nani Daman
The beauty of Nani Daman lies in the serenity it can offer you. The verdant green surroundings create a tranquil atmosphere. Nani Daman has many interesting places for you to visit and enjoy. Here gothic styles are used for creating churches while a light house stands watch over the proceedings. The rich historical buildings and lush gardens create a haven for you to explore. You can be relaxed and entertained in equal measures.
Fort of Diu
The massive Fort of Diu was one of the most impregnable forts in the area. This incredible structure has not one but two moats. From the fort, you can enjoy a stunning view of the surrounding seas. You can explore the various buildings here. Wherever you go, you are bound to run into cannonballs which litter the fort. The ramparts here contain a fascinating collection of cannons. You can climb up the lighthouse to get a panoramic view of the surrounding area.
Jampore Beach
If you want to be bathed in serenity, you can head over to the Jampore Beach. Its isolation only serves to increase its tranquility. Casurina trees line the beach. You can take a reinvigorating nap under their shade. A picnic in the enchanting surroundings is always a great idea
Nagoa Beach
The quaint Nagoa Beach is a stretch of golden sands near a small hamlet. The shape of the beach is reminiscent of a horseshoe. Here you can enjoy a number of water sports. The surroundings are covered in a profound sense of calm. Here, the waves gently meet the shore creating great opportunities for a soothing swim.
Gangeshwar Temple
The Gangeshwar Temple is not a temple per se. Rather it is a beautiful cave on the coast. The small cave contains five Shivalingas, holy symbols of Lord Shiva. The sight of the Shivalingas being washed gently by the waves can produce an effect of relaxation and tranquility.
