According to a Hindu legend, Lord Vishnu had to destroy the body of Lady Sati to stop her husband Lord Shiva from rampaging. Various parts of her body fell across the different sites of India. Her yoni fell in the spot where Kamakhya Temple currently stands. The temple is famous for the animal sacrifice still practiced here. Apart from its gory rituals, the sacred temple is ensconced in some picturesque sights. The surrounding hills are spectacular in their beauty.
The spectacular Nabagraha Temple is situated on top of the scenic Chitrasal Hill. Inside this temple, you will find nine Shivalingams. These holy structures represent the nine sacred celestial bodies of Hindu astronomy. They are the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, the North and the South Lunar Node. Each of these shivalingams is adorned with a colored garment that accurately represents its nature. Built in the 18th century, the temple is a fascinating piece of architecture.
The fascinating Umananda Temple is located on the Umananda Island on the majestic River Brahmaputra. Built in the 17th century, the ancient facades of the temple create a scenic contrast with the verdant background of nature. The river looks amazing when viewed from the temple. The temple itself is dedicated to the deity, Umananda, an avatar of Lord Shiva. There are also a number of intriguing sculptures that were cut from rock. These sculptures are a testament to the skills of the craftsmen in Assam. A number of important Hindu gods and goddesses have been portrayed with these sculptures.
Although Basistha ashram was built in the 18th century, its history can be traced back to the Vedic age. The old temple is located amongst some spectacular natural sights. You will be amazed at the forests in the distance and the sparkling mountain streams that flow beside it. Inside the ashram you will also find a beautiful waterfall and a holy cave.
The ruins of Madan Kamdev are an intriguing archaeological site. According to scholars, the statues and buildings here were possibly constructed sometime between the 10th and the 12th century. The ruins are made even more enchanting due to the presence of the natural sights around it. The thick emerald forests around Madan Kamdev contain a rich collection of amazing animals and beautiful plants. A musical rhapsody is often heard emanating from the forests thanks to the huge numbers of birds who live there. The surrounding hills are carpeted with these green forests.
The ancient Bhubaneswari Temple lies atop the enchanting Nilachal Hill. The goddess Bhubaneswari is worshipped here who is an avatar of the goddess Durga. The temple allows you to enjoy an enchanting panorama of the surrounding city thanks to its incredible location atop the mountain.
