Yamunotri : Home of the Yamuna

The scenic place called Yamunotri is the home of the other great river in India, the Yamuna. The magnificent Yamuna is second in importance only to the Ganga in the role it has assumed in the history, culture and development of India.

Yamunotri holds a special importance to the Hindus as well for the river Yamuna is considered to be holy by them. The actual glacier from where the river originates may be inaccessible but the place is still a very holy one.

However, the beauty of Yamunotri cannot be underestimated. It is stunning and fantastic. Cocooned by mountains on every side, Yamunotri has a plethora of incredible vistas and panoramas to offer. You can opt for trekking through the rough hills to get to the natural splendor of the area more closely. A more exciting activity can be rock climbing. The jagged rocky outcrops contrast perfectly with the lush dense forests here.
 

How to Get There

By Air:

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, about 196 km from Yamunotri.

By Rail :

Rishikesh railway station is the nearest railway station which is nearly 219 km from Yamunotri.

By Road :

Hanuman Chatti is well connected to Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun and other hill stations of Garhwal and kumaon region of the state. From here, the remaining 5 km       trek is covered on foot or on or horses and porters are also available on hire.
 

Surya Kund

You may not be able to bath in the steaming hot springs of Surya Kund. Some of these springs have a temperature of nearly 190 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, you can cook meals in them, which is exactly what the devotees do. Meals of rice and potatoes are cooked inside the springs after tying them tightly in a light cloth. The meals are simply dipped into the hot waters for a while. The cooked meals are consumed as sacred Prasad.
