Velankanni : Tranquil Port Town

Velankanni is located on the beautiful Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu. Velankanni may seem like a small picturesque town but it possesses a glorious history. In ancient times, the port had a busy trade with the cities of Greece and Rome. The history of the town may not be apparent anymore. However, the city is quite beautiful nonetheless.

A smaller branch of the River Cauvery, the quaint river Valley flows by the town adding another element to the splendor of Velankanni. It flows into the Bay of Bengal creating a spectacular scene at its end. However, the major appeal of this charming place lies in the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health was constructed sometime in the 16th century. Legends surround the conception of this remarkable building. It was constructed originally by Portuguese sailors. The architecture of the basilica is amazing with its Gothic style. The facades of the church are painted in a peaceful white adding to the majestic beauty of the structure. None other than Pope John XXIII gave his blessings to the church and granted it the special status of being a minor basilica.
