Deoghar : The Sacred City

Deoghar is a city that is famed for its association with the Hindu religion. In fact it ranks as one of the holiest places in Hinduism.

Popularly known as Baidyanath Dham for its association with the legends of the god, Lord Shiva, Deoghar can be an interesting place to visit. Of course, the appeal of the city is dominated by the singularly spectacular Baidyanath Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The white facades of the temple look blindingly beautiful when they are lit up at night. The Baidyanath Temple is considered to be among the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. While the architecture of the temple may seem rather simple in terms of beauty, it is quite marvelous inside.

The city is filled with similarly important religious places. The Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith here is a school. However the architecture of the place is quite beautiful. The place is also quite popular for its natural beauty present in the small orchard. The greenhouse here is quite fascinating as it serves as an aviary as well. There is a museum here which showcases the tribal heritage of India along with a gallery of photographs that showcase the lives of Sri Ramakrishna and his wife, Sri Sarada Devi.

The Tapovana hill is another fascinating sight in Deoghar. There are many beautiful caves decorating the slopes of the hill along with a temple of Lord Shiva. It is believed that the famed author of the Ramayana, Valmiki had visited this place. The calm waters of the Shivaganga create a tranquil atmosphere for relaxation.
